The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has announced that approximately TZS 120 billion will be invested in the construction of a natural gas pipeline from Ntorya to Madimba in the Mtwara region. This statement was made on July 3, 2025, by TPDC Managing Director Mr. Mussa Makame during the signing ceremony of the pipeline construction contract with two Chinese companies China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co. Ltd (CPP) and China Petroleum Technology & Development Corporation (CPTDC). The project is expected to be completed within 12 months. “The pipeline to be constructed will be 14 inches in diameter and will have the capacity to transport up to 140 million standard cubic feet of gas per day enough to generate approximately 700 megawatts of electricity. This project is crucial for natural gas consumers,” said Makame. He noted that the Mnazi Bay and Songo Songo gas fields have been in production for a long time with Songo Songo producing for over 20 years and Mnazi Bay for 18 years and that gas reserves in those fields are now beginning to decline, making it necessary to develop new sources of gas. Makame explained that the project will involve the construction of the pipeline, which will be implemented by TPDC, while the drilling of gas wells will be carried out by ARA Petroleum. Both components of the project are expected to be completed within 12 months. Regarding implementation on the ground, Makame stated that the pipeline will pass through 11 villages. Environmental impact assessments have already been conducted, and compensation payments have been made to those affected by the project. On his part, CPP Managing Director Mr. Bai Zhengshuai assured that the project will be delivered on time and in compliance with Tanzanian laws and regulations. “We will complete this project on time and in accordance with the laws of the country. We are committed to executing the project efficiently and to further strengthening our partnership,” said Mr. Bai.
